More Autumn Pics From Southern Utah

The fall foliage is past its peak in the upper elevations in Southern Utah. Dixie National Forest had spots of bright colors on Thursday but nearby,  the same aspen trees were leaveless.  The colors are now migrating down towards Zion National Park where it will reach peak color with its maples, Gambel Oaks, and cottonwoods in the next week or two. The pics below are from Dixie National Forest and north of Kolob Reservoir in the high country out towards Cedar Breaks and east of Cedar City. These images are available as prints including framed canvas at What’s New At Dawn2Dawn Photography

Painting With Your Camera

You don’t have to be Monet to achieve an impressionistic look to your photos. Just some imagination  and skill with your camera. The following pics shot yesterday are of aspen trees during fall foliage. To achieve this effect, prop your camera on your tripod and set a relatively low shutter speed but that depends on the lighting conditions. It was pretty light when I took these so my F stop was at 18, my ISO at 100, and speed at 1/25 of a second. Later on when it got darker, my shutter speed was 1/4 of a second.  The longer the exposure, the more creative you can get with this. I also had a polarizing filter on my lens. When the shutter releases, have your camera moving slightly up or down or parallel with the dominant lines of your subject. You have to experiment and use your LCD to get some feedback in order to make necessary adjustments.  You want to shoot in manual when doing trying this. The “normal” photos from this shoot will follow in a day or two.

Hiking Zion’s Subway

Zion National Park is a hiking park. The Narrows and Angel’s Landing are the two most popular but The Subway Hike is probably third. You do need a permit to do this hike but it is worth the effort. Here’s a link to the permit process Subway Permit Process There are two ways to hike The Subway, one from the top down which requires rappelling and from the bottom up. The following images are from the bottom up hike. This hike is about a 6 mile round trip and will take from 6 to 9 hours. The trail follows the left fork of North Creek. On a hot day, its great to strap on some water boots and slosh through the creek instead of hiking besides it.

Photo Of The Week- Toilet With A View

This bathroom perched on the rim of The Grand Canyon at Toroweap probably has the best view of any toilet I’ve ever seen. If it only had windows!

Photo Of The Week- Watch Out For This Cop!

I reluctantly snapped this photo of a cop parked alongside the road  in Kanab, Utah.  If you look closely, you’ll notice he’s a little stiff, sits tight and never speaks on his radio. I travel this road a lot and have seen him many times but he has never pulled anyone over. He just sits there motionless. And everyone slows down when approaching this vehicle, especially the out-of-towners.

Photo Workshop In The Desert- October 27th Thru The 31st

I will be conducting photo workshops the week beginning October 27th in and around the Coyote Buttes area on the Utah/Arizona border. This is a remote area that that is famous for The Wave but there are also other great landscapes to capture. Below are some images of places I will take you to. You will also learn how to turn that photo into a work of art using Photoshop, Camera Raw and Lightroom. Contact me for details.

Photo Of The Week- Colorado Autumn

Can you feel autumn coming? It’s my favorite season. The Colorado Rockies are a great place to experience fall colors and a little chill in the air. Aspen trees reach full color at different altitudes and latitudes.  This photo was shot on October 13th, 2012 near Telluride.  Peak colors are more likely  to happen in the last week of September and first week of October in Colorado but it varies. See chart at bottom.          Photo available as a print  or downloadable file at Dawn2dawn Photography
