It has been a very dry winter in Southern Utah but we did receive some precipitation at Zion NP this past week. It did snow on the Eastside of Zion and those images will follow.
I see a lot of national forests out west looking like they are being ravaged by blight and disease . And they are. But Utah’s Dixie National Forest in as vibrant and green as it gets! Watch in HiDef at Full Screen. Music is Doris Dub by Tosca.
The winter aspens have a life of their own when snowed upon, but so do the Ponderosa Pines with their distinctive orangish/brown bark. They don’t lose their leaves during winter because they done’t have leaves but pine needles.. These were taken at The Kaibab National Forest in Northern Arizona this past week.
Ask the Coyote in the first image. When leaveless, the Aspen shows off its trunk and branches in a surreal and abstract way. Three inches of fresh snow helped to add to the lines of the trees. These were taken on Wednesday at the Kaibab National Forest adjacent to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon.

Autumn has decided to stick around a bit this year in Southern Utah. Two weeks ago these maple trees in Zion were mostly green. In years past, the colors would have been at peak. But patience and another trip up Zion Canyon enabled me to get these shots.
I spent half a rainy day in Vermont but enjoyed the fall colors. It does pay to get off the beaten path and take some old country roads.
Due to copious amounts of rain this summer, autumn colors will be arriving later than usual in Colorado. Mostly in October I reckon. When I was there in mid-September, there were small pockets of color but few and far between. I may try a quick trip back in a week or two.

Made my way up Zion Canyon on Friday hoping for peak fall colors. I was not disappointed. Cottonwoods, Big-tooth Maples and Scrub Oaks provided most of the color.
