You get two seasons for the price of one. Dixie National Forest near Cedar City, Utah, received a few inches of fresh snow the other day on top of the autumn colors already present. The elevation at this spot is around 8 to 9,000 feet and the temperature was 39 degrees F at midday.
I see a lot of national forests out west looking like they are being ravaged by blight and disease . And they are. But Utah’s Dixie National Forest in as vibrant and green as it gets! Watch in HiDef at Full Screen. Music is Doris Dub by Tosca.
State Route 12 is another scenic highway in Southern Utah. It is listed as one of Utah’s Scenic Byways. It starts near Capitol Reef National Park, ascends the Dixie National Forest to an elevation nearing 10,000 feet, and ends near Bryce Canyon National Park. Here’s just a few images I took when I traveled Highway 12 a few weeks ago.
The fall foliage is past its peak in the upper elevations in Southern Utah. Dixie National Forest had spots of bright colors on Thursday but nearby, the same aspen trees were leaveless. The colors are now migrating down towards Zion National Park where it will reach peak color with its maples, Gambel Oaks, and cottonwoods in the next week or two. The pics below are from Dixie National Forest and north of Kolob Reservoir in the high country out towards Cedar Breaks and east of Cedar City.
