Fresh Snow At Zion Country

We finally received some measurable snowfall this past week as temperatures dropped with new precipitation. Temperatures this winter have been rather mild as highs have consistently reached the 60s (F).

Snow-Coverd Red Canyon

The whiteness of fresh snow against the red and orange hues of eroded sandstone at Dixie National Forest’s Red Canyon in Southern Utah. Red Canyon is a mini version of nearby Bryce Canyon National Park, whose photos will appear soon.

Foggy, Snowy Bryce Canyon NP

A quick trip to Bryce Canyon to capture snow-covered hoodoos ended in disappointment as the foggy conditions obscured the canyon of hoodoos below but left 4-5 inched of fresh snow above the rim. I guess it’s best to visit just after the storm has passed which I normally do. See past image.

The Ponderosa Pine In Snow

The winter aspens have a life of their own when snowed upon, but so do the Ponderosa Pines with their distinctive orangish/brown bark. They don’t lose their leaves during winter because they done’t have leaves but pine needles.. These were taken at The Kaibab National Forest in Northern Arizona this past week.

More Still Shots From Snowy Kaibab

Snow is very ephemeral here in the Southwest so you better get out and capture it or the snow will be gone by noon. Even though I had a 2 hour drive to get to the Kaibab National Forest, the temperatures were still in the mid 20s when I arrived around 9 a.m. I believe I had the whole place to myself except for the 2 snowplows.

Snowy Grand Canyon

That huge California storm is making it’s way through Arizona now. You’ll notice that because of temperatures at the Grand Canyon, the snow level dips about 1,000 feet into the canyon. Below that, it rained. Nonetheless, there was plenty of snow at  the South and North Rims and it’s still snowing with road closures.

Nearby Flagstaff is receiving a foot or two and hopefully I can get out of here soon. As I’m developing this post, it’s snowing hard with no visibilty into the canyon. But it’s not a bad place to be stranded!
