I will be conducting personal, 1 on 1 photography workshops at Zion National Park on Wednesday October 22nd, Thursday October 23rd and Friday October 24th. Fall is the best time to photograph in and around Zion National Park. Zion is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Las Vegas and only 6-7 hours from Southern California. I am offering half day ($175) and full day workshops ($295). Contact me with further details. I will consider small groups. I will bring you to those places where you have the best chance to capture the ultimate image. You will also learn how to turn those images into works of art with camera technique and post processing in Photoshop. Below are recent mages I’ve taken at Zion during the fall season. Photo Of The Week- Macro Sunflower
Have you really looked at a sunflower closeup? Looks like stars or starfish around a scoop of beluga caviar. I used an extension tube, not my 105mm macro lens. The extension tubes are cheap and allow you to get in really close. They attach between your normal lens and the camera body. Kenko extension tubes come in a set of three and are available at B & H Photo where I buy most of my photo gear. Excellent customer service. Click on image for larger view. Do Not Stop At The Bar Before Viewing North Rim
At the North Rim of The Grand Canyon sits The Grand Canyon Lodge which of course has a bar. The bar is less than 100 feet from the rim. And at night, the rim has no lights and very steep drops into the abyss. And with a thunderstorm approaching, the mood reminded me of one of those scenes in Apocalypse Now. You better watch and know where you’re going. These images were captured last Thursday. Click on image for larger view.

Zion’s Amazing Narrows
It’s September and time to make the trek up the Virgin River at Zion National Park, Utah. The water was warm and refreshing on a 95 F degree day. I lugged 2 cameras, 2 lenses, a tripod and my hiking pole amongst other gadgets and some energy. If you’ll be doing The Narrows yourself, you can rent the necessary gear at Zion Outfitter. In case you missed it, see the time lapse video from The Narrows by clicking on link Narrows Time Lapse. Following are the images I captured. Click on image for larger view.

Yellowstone’s Amazing Waters- Hot and Cold
Yellowstone National Park is a wonderland of waterways. Living in the parched desert of Southern Utah, I was jealous of the vast network of waterfalls and rivers that are ubiquitous in the park. During my recent trip to Yellowstone and The Grand Tetons, I was amazed how green and lush the landscape was. And don’t forget the hot waters from springs that generate a myriad of colors from the bacteria that flourish there. Click on image for larger view. The Good, The Bad and The Beautiful – More From The Grand Tetons
I arrived at the entrance of Grand Teton National Park around 2pm. I asked the ranger if the heavy cloud cover would lift. You could not see The Tetons at all. Like a conservative weatherman, he said the chances were 50/50. I drove in and around the park and basically bided my time for conditions to improve. And finally the clouds began lifting along with my spirits. I did start at Schwabackers Landing where the skies began to brighten. See Previous Post .
The GOOD is that the cloud cover was lifting. The BAD was that I dropped my camera onto the sidewalk trying to set up around sunset. I was in too much of a hurry and the camera wasn’t properly secured to the ball head. I shot these images and the ones in my previous post in about 5 hours, so I was moving fast. Too fast. The camera worked fine but the lens was hard to zoom. I guess it could have been worse. The Tetons were exhibiting major mood swings by this time, just like I was. THE BEAUTIFUL- The photos below that I took after the accident! Click on photo for larger view.
You Can’t Take A Bad Picture Here!
Schwabacker’s Landing, just east of Grand Teton National Park at Jackson Hole, is one of those places that produces iconic images of the Grand Tetons. On a still day, the reflections in the beaver ponds are a photographers dream. Add in some clouds and great light, you just hope your batteries don’t go dead. Below are still photos from last week. A companion time lapse video can be seen here – Teton Time Lapse Video
