I recently showcased fall images from The North Rim area of The Grand Canyon in Northern Arizona. The highlands of Southern Utah have been putting on its own fashion show this past week. This area is above the redrock country most associated with Southern Utah, reaching some 7,000 to 10,000 feet in elevation. These beautiful sub-alpine forests contain awesome Aspen tree groves that provide most of the color in these mountains. Stay tuned as the autumn colors migrate to lower elevations in the next month, including in and around Zion National Park.
The North Rim of The Grand Canyon and surrounding Kaibab National Forest yielded some intense fall colors this past week. The aspens were on fire at around the 9,ooo foot altitude.
The aspens are changing colors at Grand Canyon National Park and the adjoining Kaibab National Forest in Northern Arizona.
At the upper elevations (8,000 feet) in and around Zion National Park where the aspen trees grow, the leaves have not changed much in color. They are mostly green still. Except for one spot I found Friday where the sun seems to shine all day long at Kolob Reservoir. Images below are of the colorful aspens and sunset along Kolob Terrace in Zion National Park.
Can you feel autumn coming? It’s my favorite season. The Colorado Rockies are a great place to experience fall colors and a little chill in the air. Aspen trees reach full color at different altitudes and latitudes. This photo was shot on October 13th, 2012 near Telluride. Peak colors are more likely to happen in the last week of September and first week of October in Colorado but it varies. See chart at bottom. Fall is the best time to photograph in and around Zion National Park. Zion is about a 2 1/2 hour drive from Las Vegas and only 6-7 hours from Southern California.
