Tall Tales From The Field

I Recently Dined At USA’s Best Restaurant!

Copper Top BBQ is the  best restaurant in the USA as voted by Yelp in 2015. It’s not the best I’ve ever been to but the food is pretty good. It’s a walk-up joint with five picnic tables and a few bales of hay to sit on.  Copper Top is  located in Big Pine, California and I passed it as I was exiting Death Valley National Park last week.  It has great views of the Sierras but I had to eat in my car in the back lot. I had the Tri-Tip Sandwich($10). Very delicious and layered with about 3 inches of meat. The tri-tip wasn’t quite as tender as I would expect for the best. I’d give it an 8 out of 10.  Spago’s is the best eatery I’ve been to.

What’s the best restaurant you’ve dined at?

Detour to Alabama Hills in California’s Owens Valley

The normal road I take to Eureka Dunes at Death Valley National Park was washed out. So I had to go around and wouldn’t make it to the dunes that night. So I camped at Alabama Hills near Lone Pine California. It has great views and the camping is free! And the full moon was to rise that night.

California’s Owens Valley

California’s Owens Valley is home to the Sierra Nevada Mountain Range to the west and The White Mountains to the east. Some of the tallest peaks in the country are here.  Two weeks ago, a winter storm was blasting through the area and as happens frequently, was unable to move further east to Owens Valley or Death Valley. That’s why these 2 valleys are so dry, especially Death Valley. Located near Lone Pine is the Alabama Hills Recreation Area which is a haven for rock climbers because of the steep and vertical rock formations.  The movies Gladiator and Iron Man were partly filmed there along with dozens of others.

Sequoia National Park- A Park Of Extremes

Yosemite National Park may get all the pub and glory but Sequoia National Park is an enticing alternative high up in California’s Sierra Nevada Mountains.  If you like peace, solitude, adventure, rugged peaks, pristine lakes and rivers, along with it’s main attraction, Giant Sequoia Trees, then Sequoia is a preferred destination.  I worked a summer in Sequoia during my college years and it is a summer I will never forget. Where else can you encounter a black bear and a tarantula on the same day!

The park has immense elevation changes starting from the chaparral in the foothills at 1,300 feet, to dense sub alpine forests and onto the treeless alpine environment.  Sequoia is home to Mt Whitney, the highest peak in the lower 48 states at 14,491 feet and the world’s largest tree, The General Sherman.

Photo Of The Week- A tale or tail of the squirrel.

This Western Gray Squirrel really wanted his picture taken. And to get my interest, it crept pretty close towards me and in an instant, flashed its big bushy tail. So became the tale of the tail.
