These badlands border the Paria River in Southern Utah.
Also known in geologic terms as the Chinle Formation located at Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument. This spot is located at the old Paria Movie Set where The Outlaw Josie Wales was filmed. I half expected Clint Eastwood to come walking out of the landscape. These were shot an hour or two before sunset and with the clouds, made for some great light!

Cedar Canyon is between Cedar City and Cedar Breaks National Monument in Southern Utah. It is marked by Ponderosa Pines, Aspens and sandstone cliffs. Autumn is a special time to visit at or past peak color.
While out photographing autumn colors in Southern Utah, I realized I was a stone’s throw from Bryce Canyon National Park. And sunset was close with a nearly full moon rising. These were all shot from the incomparable Inspiration Point.
This is the first in a series of posts capturing the fall colors in Southern Utah. Because of the elevation changes in Southern Utah, autumn schedules its arrival at various times. Just north of Zion National Park is Kolob Terrace and the Markagunt Plateau where elevations vary from 7,000 to to 10,000 feet. By the first week of November, autumn will show up at the 4,000 foot level at Zion National Park.

I wasn’t quite expecting the brilliant colors I encountered at Kolob Reservoir yesterday. I really caught the aspens at peak, peak color!. Kolob Reservoir is about 35 miles from Zion National Park in Southern Utah and at an elevation of some 8,000 feet.
