The swells a few weeks ago were crashing pretty high along California’s Pacific Ocean Coastline. Fortunately these two people were not hit by these massive waves and swept to sea.

Get Creative By Blending or Stacking Images
When I was on the California Coast recently, I decided to take numerous exposures of the exact same scene and then blend them in a software program. I also used these jpegs to produce a time lapse video which can be viewed here
But I wanted to see what you could produce if you blend 100 images of a moving scene, like moving waves and clouds. It’s similar to a longer exposure but I took an exposure every 20 seconds for about 35 minutes. Below you’ll also see the result and what the scene looked like with a single normal exposure. I actually shot 2 different scenes and present them but I also show one image where I blend both scenes, which is the bottom image.
So, if you want to get creative, try taking multiple exposures and blending them in Lightroom, Photoshop or stack them with a stacking program like StarStax
Remember to use a tripod, a shutter release or better, an intervalometer, which programs the length between exposures for your camera. You can just sit there and watch the waves crashing upon the beach.

Sunrise On the Pacific
Normally we photograph the setting sun, not rising sun on the Pacific Ocean. But, I woke up around 5am and decided to check it out. In the winter, the sun actually rises more from the Southeast, not East. So I was able to get a vantage point where the color from the sun would be in the frame along with the crashing waves on the beach. With just enough clouds to give the images some depth, it was a glorious sunrise even though I got a soaking from the waves. This may have been what Costanza said on a Seinfeld episode but I believe it was a line that Hemingway wrote in “The Old Man And The Sea”. I’m going with Hemingway because my recent trip to the California Coast reminded me more of a Hemingway novel than a Seinfeld episode. A Pacific Storm produced swells as big as I have ever seen. Rainbow Ice Plant Along California’s Coast
On my trip last week along California’s spectacular coastline, I noticed that the Ice Plant growing along the sand dunes and beaches was a very vibrant color. Fall weather had made its mark on the Ice Plant. In the second photo below, you’ll see the color of Ice Plant in other seasons. With an approaching Pacific Ocean storm, the contrast of the autumn colors to the dark blue skies was a refreshing look. Now, if we could only get an ocean in Southern Utah where I live.
This is the beach at Garrapata State Park just south of Carmel. The beach disappeared the next day under the high surf produced from a strong Pacific Ocean Storm. Those photos to follow soon.
