The Amazing Wahweap Hoodoos
From Friday’s 10 mile trek up Wahweap Wash in Southern Utah. We explored this carnival of anomalies and timeless products of erosion and produced these images.
It’s part of the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument, a landscape that Trump wants to reduce in size by about 50%. Environmental groups such as SUWA, Southern Utah Wilderness Alliance, https://suwa.org/ are fighting this madness. Can’t imagine oil and gas wells populating this land.
Colorado National Monument
This little gem of a park near Grand Junction was a splendid side trip on my way to the Colorado Rockies.
Marble Canyon
Marble Canyon in Northern Arizona, precedes the Grand Canyon but is just as grand. Named by John Wesley Powell because he thought the limestone in the canyon walls resembled marble. Marble Canyon begins at Lees Ferry, a launching point for river rafters, and ends at the confluence of the Little Colorado River and Colorado River.
Yant Flat
This geologic anomaly is anything but flat. Located near St. George, Utah, at the base of the Pine Valley Mountains, this landscape is a gnarly, twisted abstract in nature. Along with some friends, I visited this spot for the first time even though I’ve lived near Yant Flat for the last 10 years.
Cool Clay Beds
At the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument in Southern Utah. This is an area that the Trump administration is reducing to half its original size. You can’t mess with this area and I believe this area is not being affected.

The Nautilus
Aptly named as it resembles the seashell, The Nautilus is a highly eroded sandstone rock formation in Southern Utah. My friends Ali and Thomas gave the scene some sense of scale.
Colorful Clay Beds
Made another trip last week to one of my favorite places. Clay beds in the Coyote Buttes area of Northern Arizona. Colors are a product of minerals leeching through the Chinle Layer, mostly made of clay.
Wire Pass- Barely Passable
Wire Pass, along the Utah/Arizona border is a prelude to the more famous Buckskin Gulch. Unfortunately, Buckskin was full of water after recent rains so my friends Ali, Thomas and I settled for the narrow Wire Pass.
