My Favorite Mammal……..to photograph

Photo Of The Week- What do Easter Sunday, Snowshoeing and a Black Bear have in common?

With Easter Sunday approaching, I was reminded of an Easter Sunday in 2006 when I visited Sequoia National Park.  It was April 14th but there was still a foot of snow on the ground in Giant Forest.  I decided to get up early and snowshoe out to Moro Rock, about 2 miles from the road. Just before I got to Moro Rock, I gazed to my right and to my astonishment , there was a black bear sitting in the snow, about 50 feet from me!  He was staring right at me. I’m not sure who was more surprised but I kept moving as I was alone, in snowshoes, in a forest with a black bear. Earlier that week, I had read a news report where a family was attacked by a black bear in Tennessee and a little girl was killed. So that was on my mind. I was so petrified, it never entered my mind to take a photo of this beast. (You’re probably wondering that if I didn’t photograph the bear in the woods, did I really see one?)  I just kept moving and looking behind me.  After that, I reached Moro Rock where the morning fog was lifting from the valley below and the Sierras were visible in the distance. This photo was published by Outdoor Photography magazine in their My Favorite Places article.  The following image can be purchased as a print or downloadable file at Moro Rock Image

As I took this shot, I was still mindful of that Black Bear.

Adding dimension to a photograph

The images we view on a computer screen or in a book are two-dimensional. The photos are flat and have no depth. I have difficulty at times capturing the scene on a digital camera as I really experienced it. But you can add some depth to an image by incorporating certain elements. Adding people or wildlife gives the shot some depth and a sense of size.  You can also embed leading lines that brings you deeper into the scene. Adding foregrounds and backgrounds produces depth. The following images show what you can do to produce images that jump off the page or computer screen    Click on first image to start slideshow.

Photo Of The Week- On The Edge

My friend Dale was nice enough and brave enough to pose for this shot on the edge of Zion Canyon at Zion National Park. He’s about 1,500 feet above the canyon floor. I kept motioning him to move closer to the edge and he obliged. Wearing a red shirt helped to make him stand out amongst this massive landscape. I was also on the edge when I took this shot but flat on my stomach.

Stalking Cougar

I stared down the approaching cougar, trying to focus on focusing my camera. I knew I had little time to get the shot and then outrun the predator.  The cougar was gazing at me like I was tonight’s dinner. Fortunately for me there was a big fence between me and the big cat, actually 2 fences.  This was shot at 200mm, F6.3, 1/100th at 500 ISO since the light was not great. The F6.3 yields little depth of field which also removes the fence between me and the cougar. This was taken at The Exotic Feline Center neat Rosamond, California. PHOTO OF THE WEEK- Casting For Bison or Fly Bisoning or………

My friend Ted and I were along the Firehole River in Yellowstone National Park. He was presumably fly fishing for trout and I was photographing the nearby flora and fauna that makes Yellowstone unique.  I went back to my vehicle and got out my big lens and caught Ted casting for Bison?  Since I was about 100 yards away, the telephoto lens distorts the distances of the objects in your image.  Everything appears to be closer together than what they actually are. Of course, that was the effect I was going for.
