Thursday night in Southern Utah saw many a thunder and lightning storm pass through the landscape. I hadn’t witnessed this many bolts of electricity since I moved here 8 years ago. My friend and photography protege Ali Erdmann and I just sat there with our cameras on tripods, positioned to capture the light show. Her brand new blog can be found at The Crooked Trail There was electricity all around us. The great thing about these storms was that they didn’t really reach our position until just before dark when it started to rain on us.

These are amazing captures, Mike. How does one take a photo of lightning? It seems to happen faster than one could click a shutter. Do you use continuous framing?

Thanks Eliza. Yes, I pretty much took an exposure every 2 seconds and hoping that of the 1500 or so images I took, that I would get 15-20 capturing lightning. We also did some short exposures and some longer exposure between 5 to 10 seconds

Great photos! We could use some of those clouds, but not the lightning!
