Photographing star trails can be fun and there is no one way to produce an image. In the top photo, I combined about 15 images to get this streaking effect.
In this second photo, I completed about a 45 minute exposure to get streaks that were a bit longer, but not so many. I did a layer mask to achieve the multi-colored look.

Took some shots of the Milky Way on Friday night near the rim of the Grand Canyon. Jupiter is the bright sphere in these images.
The Milky Way on a clear night can get one to wonder about our world and beyond. My friend Alison’s first trip to the Grand Canyon was a wonderful experience, even at night. You can see her new blog at The Crooked Trail. These images were made this past Friday night.
The Milky Way Galaxy will be easily observed in the night sky for the next week. The moon will be rising later into the night, each night. Our solar system is at the edge of The Milky Way which is some 100,00 light years across. These images were shot last night at Zion National Park, Utah
The Milky Way is appearing in the night sky here this week at Zion National Park, Utah. It’s a celestial feast that can be observed in the southern sky after 11pm. The Milky Way will move across the southern sky from east to west.
An abbreviated star trails shot using about 50 exposures. The multi-colored background light must be from Las Vegas, over 100 miles away. Because of this ambient light, the star trails don’t look as pronounced as when it is completely dark out. When you combine 50 exposures, you are combining the light from each as well. The boldest and brightest streak is Sirius, the brightest object in our night sky besides the Moon, other planets and our Sun.
While camping at Eureka Dunes last week, I decided to get the camera out for some night sky images. Dune photos to follow soon. The bright star at the top of images 1 and 3 is Sirius.
