Point Lobos State Natural Reserve
Possibly “The crown jewel of the California State Park System”, Point Lobos is about as good as it gets along California’s coastline. Landscape Painter Francis McComas called Point Lobos “the greatest meeting of land and water in the world.”
Located at Carmel, the park is highly protected because of its natural wonders, above and below the surface of the water.
“Smell the sea and feel the sky, let your soul and spirit fly”
That’s a line from the Van Morrison song “Brand New Day” That’s the feeling I get whenever I make my annual trek to California’s Pacific Ocean coastline. From Cambria up to Carmel, the surf was high and the sky was eclectic.

That’s what landscape artist Francis McComas said about this spot along the Pacific Ocean Coastline at Carmel, California. Point Lobos State Natural Reserve became part of California’s State Park system in 1933. They only allow 150 vehicles in the park at any given time in order to preserve its tranquility.

Below are three similar images of the marine layer rolling into Carmel Valley on California’s Pacific Ocean Coastline. The top photo was produced by stitching 3 images in Photoshop. The second photo used two images and the last was one image.
With the clouds obscuring the sun along the coast, the light was extremely flat and not worth photographing. No glorious sunset shots today. Then I remembered from a trip here years ago, that there was a good vantage point in the highlands of Carmel Valley, overlooking the Pacific Ocean.

The swells a few weeks ago were crashing pretty high along California’s Pacific Ocean Coastline. Fortunately these two people were not hit by these massive waves and swept to sea.

This may have been what Costanza said on a Seinfeld episode but I believe it was a line that Hemingway wrote in “The Old Man And The Sea”. I’m going with Hemingway because my recent trip to the California Coast reminded me more of a Hemingway novel than a Seinfeld episode. A Pacific Storm produced swells as big as I have ever seen. Time Lapse Video of Stormy California Coast
I was just south of Carmel, California on Friday when a winter storm passed through producing some awesome surf. I had never seen waves as tall as these 20 to 25 footers. Still photos to follow although here is one below. The photos or video don’t quite capture the immensity of the swells.
