I’ll be visiting the Colorado Rockies in mid-September and wondered where the best autumn colors are. Especially in Aspen tree forests. One person told me today Crested Butte. What do you think?

I used to live in Rico, CO, a small town about 30 miles south of Telluride, and 45 miles north of Dolores and Cortez. Rico has Aspen Groves on both sides of the highway that goes through it, over Lizard Head pass and on to Telluride. That whole area is stunning in the fall.

Thanks Katelon. I have been to the Telluride area and that is fantastic for fall colors although I was probably a week or 2 late. The photo I posted is from that area. I hope to get to that area again this fall. Want to climb Mt Sneffels!

Nice! Did you drive through Rico? I loved have entire hillsides of Aspens on either side of the road.

No, I didn’t go thru Rico but I’ll check it out.

Yeah, the easy answer is probably Kebler Pass between Crested Butte and Paonia. That area has the vastest aspen groves I’ve ever seen. There are lots of roadside views, but also a ton of wilderness aspen groves that not many folks hike to. There are a LOT of options in that area. Telluride to Rico is great too.

I like the San Juan Mountains. Much of Colorado has mountains and aspen, so it’s hard to go wrong.

Thanks Chuck. I plan to enter Colorado from the north and head south so I should see a lot.
