At this time of year, you can enjoy the Milky Way without having to stay up till 2 a.m. I started shooting these images around 10:30 p.m. Went to about midnight after waiting some for couds to dissipate. Just find a dark place like Zion National Park, which is designated as a Dark Sky Park!
Thunderstorms were moving through the area so I was hoping to capture some images of Bryce with lightning and or a rainbow. Didn’t happen but the light was right enabling me to get these pics.
North of McClure Pass, the Forest Service was performing a prescribed burn at the foothill of Mount Sopris (12,965 feet). Not a bad photo opp as well.

It’s just down the highway from the more proclaimed Monument Valley but this not so little gem is free and wild. It’s on BLM land near Mexican Hat, Utah. I’m definitely coming back soon here to try some night photography.
Cathedral Gorge State Park is in Nevada but close to the Utah border. It’s in a remote location and gets little visitation but it is grand nonetheless. These Bentonite spires were formed through erosion over millions of years and seems prehistoric. I kept waiting for a Neanderthal to appear.
While driving through Zion NP the other day, rain clouds and fog persisted. Which always gives Zion a more ghostly and sublime look.
Photo Tip: All of these images were produced with my Apple iPhone 14 Pro. Go to settings in the phone so you can select the ability to shoot in RAW format. The RAW format button will show on your screen and you just click on it to shoot in RAW. RAW images have more pixels allowing you to make larger photos at higher resolutions. You can also make bigger shifts while editing the photo without producing unwanted noise or pixelation. I only shoot in RAW if I know I have a really good photo opp.

It snowed another 8-10 inches at Grand Canyon National Park on Thursday. Glad I was stranded due to road closures. The snow level dropped another 2,000 feet into the canyon, the deepest I’ve ver seen at the Grand Canyon. The increase in precipitation and lower temperatures were responsible. Companion video to follow later.

This big West Coast storm was forecasted to hit Northern Arizona as well with snow forecasted. On the first day, the weather was too warm for snow but it did rain and I was able to capture these images. As a heads up, it did snow today and more is forecasted for tomorrow so stay tuned.
