Desert Flora Now Appearing

Near Zion National Park, the Prickly Pear Cactus, Cholla Cactus, Claret Cup and the Cliffrose are among the desert plant species showing off their colors and textures. Ninety degree temperatures in March accelerated the growing and flowering of these desert classics.

New pine cones appear during spring on a Pinyon Pine tree near Zion National Park, Utah. The cones will produce a white pine nut and are usually harvested during autumn.

Fresh Snow At Zion Country

We finally received some measurable snowfall this past week as temperatures dropped with new precipitation. Temperatures this winter have been rather mild as highs have consistently reached the 60s (F).

Snow-Covered Hoodoos? What’s A Hoodoo?

Hoodoos are those sandstone spires you see a lot in Southern Utah, especially at Bryce Canyon. Erosion has carved a unique rock formation that isn’t easily duplicated. They had just received 8 inches of fresh powder so I had to check it out last week. By the way, it was one degree (F)

The whiteness of fresh snow against the red and orange hues of eroded sandstone at Dixie National Forest’s Red Canyon in Southern Utah. Red Canyon is a mini version of nearby Bryce Canyon National Park, whose photos will appear soon.
