This Ain’t No Ordinary Gulch!

Buckskin Gulch along the Arizona/Utah border is the longest slot canyon in the United States. I’ve never completed the whole thing but just a few miles into this abyss is enough to gather some good images. I dragged some friends along who made for some pretty good models(No Royalties Due) and for a good sense of scale. It’s about 13 miles and ends at the Paria River which together make a great backpacking trip.

Beautiful photos although the trail looks a bit scary to me 🙂

Thanks Katelon. There were a few spots where it got really narrow and you had to climb down some rocks.

Is it a clear path or easy to get lost?

You can’t get lost, only one way to go.

Stunning!!! Can’t imagine being there and walking through the rock alley.
Thank you for the post, Michael!

      You’re welcome Amy.

Nice! Though I understand that slot canyons can be a bit dangerous during flash floods.

Yes, I wouldn’t want to be there when it rains. Fortunately, there was zero chance of rain.

Thirteen miles seems like a long hike, you must be well-conditioned! Beautiful shots of this amazing place. If this was formed by water, does water still flow here, as in flash floods?

We only went in about 3 miles and they still get flash floods there but there was zero chance of rain the other day.

Wouldn’t want to be anywhere near there when it rains!

Summer is when you have to watch for flash floods during the monsoon season

        Information assuages fear! 😉

Been there, great place. Now, have you been to the nearby Wave?

    1. Michael Andrew Just Avatar

I’ve been to The Wave 5 times. It’s pretty easy to get a walk in permit during the winter months and I live an hour away from the BLM office that issues the permits via lottery

Oh my, I am jealous. I guess winter is as good as any season for shooting the wave…

Great photos and the people do give it great scale. Is it pretty easy to find your way in these canyons or is it easy to get lost?

    1. Michael Andrew Just Avatar

Thanks Jenny. This one is pretty easy to find, some are not so easy and you need a good guide or map!

Hiking the fins in arches required a guide probably because so many people get lost. I always think of that when I see places like this. Great photos. Have a good weekend.
