I’ve been out to South Coyote Buttes 5 or 6 times but never experienced the blooming desert wildflowers on display. We’ve had quite a bit of rain this spring and it shows, even in the desert. South Coyote Buttes is on the Arizona/Utah border and is about 2o miles from the nearest paved highway.
What a lovely post! I have never seen the desert so beautifully draped with wildflowers. Your photos are absolutely gorgeous. Many, many years ago I drove from Grand Canyon to Phoenix to Las vegas to PalmSprings/LA and I found the desert highly amazing. In Norway and Germany we have rain the whole year ( and sometimes snow) and it’s green everywhere. These images make a nice contrast.
Thanks Dina. The desert is nice and there are areas out here that are high in elevation and have beautiful pine tree forests.
These images make me want to just get in my car and start driving!. But Coyote Buttes is over 5 and a half hours away from my home. Can’t you photograph something as beautiful closer to the Las Vegas area that I can go visit? Let’s say withing 2 to 3 hours drive! 🙂

The desert in bloom is something pretty special, which you have captured well here, Michael. Love the sweep of those rock formations. How long does it take you to reach this spot if it is 20 mi. off road?
Thanks Eliza. It took about an hour to go those 20 miles. A lot of sand to negotiate.
I’ll have to check that out as soon as i get back to St. George. How far is it from St. George?
About 3 hours from St. George but requires 4 wheel drive because of the sandy roads you need to drive through and some rock outcroppings.
Ah…my Suburu wouldn’t make it then.

Zion does but some areas have more right now
